The action came after board members raised questions about whether some coaches and other event workers were listed for multiple seasons and whether certain positions received both stipends and other pay. “I think I just need some more clarification about what these rates are for and why it would be in addition to fee,” said a board member during discussion. The board also expressed concern about whether tabling the item would prevent payment for events occurring before the next meeting.
Board President Mister McDonald moved a unanimous-consent amendment to remove item G and to modify item O to omit duplicate names from the event-worker list. The motion was seconded and taken by unanimous voice affirmation from members present. McDonald said the amendment was intended to avoid delaying fall activities while preserving time to clarify outstanding questions about stipends and seasons.
In the discussion, members asked whether stipends under the proposed contracts were intended “in lieu of” percentage-based supplemental pay or “in addition to” existing pay. One member noted she understood prior presentations to indicate a single stipend replacing supplemental percentages. Board members repeatedly requested clearer labeling of season or role for each name on the list so the board could verify whether a single person was being paid multiple times for overlapping duties.
The board adopted a short-term approach: approve fall-season items by name via a consent method for time-sensitive positions and defer unresolved contracts for later meetings to allow staff to clarify season designations, duplicate listings, and whether event workers would be paid before the next board meeting if items remained tabled.
Board members and staff also discussed recruiting and publicity for these positions, including whether the district had systematically advertised openings to students seeking community-service hours. The board requested staff examine whether volunteer or student-help options were available and to return with recommendations.
The amendment and approach were procedural decisions to allow athletics and fall events to proceed while preserving the board’s ability to review and approve outstanding pay-authorization details at a later date.
