Temple ISD reports growth in newcomer population, expands ESL curriculum and family engagement

Temple ISD staff on Sept. 8 presented the district’s bilingual and ESL program report, highlighting an increase in newcomer enrollment, expanded instructional supports and growing family engagement activities.
The presenter told the board that the district’s newcomer population numbered about 114 at the start of the year with 35 languages represented. “It averages around between you know, sometimes last year, we had about a 100, and this year, it's almost hitting a 120,” the presenter said, describing a gradual increase over time.

Staff described summer language-enrichment classes for pre-K through second grade paid in part with Title funds and said parent engagement events demonstrated community interest. The presenter noted that students who participate have been exposed to college tours and community resources as part of outreach.
