Wakefield high school school‑choice pilot fills three of eight seats; no lottery required

Wakefield School Committee — The district’s pilot school‑choice program at Wakefield High School has enrolled three students for the upcoming year, the superintendent told the committee on Aug. 12.
At the June meeting the committee approved offering eight seats at the high school (two seats each for grades 9–12). The superintendent reported that three students applied — one each at grades 9, 10 and 12 — so a lottery was not required. The district said those applicants are proceeding through the guidance and enrollment process.
Administrators clarified that the district has defined enrollment windows and lottery dates; once enrollment windows close the remaining seats are not held open for late applicants. The district said it will monitor the pilot and provide an update in October on how the initial round of acceptance is going and whether to expand the program in future years.
Committee members said the pilot offers an opportunity to learn by doing and to consider extensions, including whether faculty might participate in lottery procedures in the future.
No committee vote was needed during the Aug. 12 meeting; the report repeated the June committee decision to offer the eight seats and updated the committee on the applicant count.
