Committee approves Galloway Middle School trip to Quebec for winter 2026

The Wakefield School Committee voted unanimously Aug. 26 to approve a Galloway Middle School trip to Quebec City scheduled for Feb. 6–8, 2026. The committee approved the trip after hearing a presentation from Aaron Manzi, interim principal of Doyle and world‑language coordinator, who described the itinerary and registration details.
Manzi said the trip, a decades‑long tradition at Galloway, will be open to both seventh and eighth graders going forward and run every other year to ease planning. "Students haven't been attending this trip for well over 30 years," Manzi said, adding that opening the trip to both grades will increase participation and help keep costs down.
Manzi presented a base cost of $1,135 per student contingent on at least 22 paying participants; per‑student prices would rise if fewer students enroll. The itinerary includes cultural and winter activities such as visiting Saint Anne's Basilica, a Sugar Shack dinner, dog sledding, snow rafting, a visit to an ice hotel, participation in the Carnival parade, and a toboggan run in Quebec City. The trip includes two nights' lodging, most meals, bilingual local guide services, ground transportation from Wakefield, and a protection plan embedded in the price; optional additional cancellation insurance is available for $31.50.
Registration was scheduled to open Aug. 28 and close Oct. 1 if the committee approved the trip. Manzi said the tour company Promote Tours was selected and that the trip had historically averaged about 25 students but served fewer (16) last year; increasing the eligible grade levels was intended to stabilize the per‑student cost. The committee moved to approve the trip; the motion passed unanimously.
The administration said it would hold a Zoom informational meeting for parents on Sept. 4 at 7:00 p.m., and the district will provide details on chaperone opportunities and requirements. Manzi said the typical chaperone ratio is about 8 students per chaperone and that three chaperones are planned for the trip.
