The Smithfield Town Council on Feb. 4 approved updates to the town's entrance corridor overlay and zoning map after a brief amendment to broaden a speed-limit goal, and it authorized three invoices exceeding $20,000.
Councilwoman Butler moved the overlay updates from the consent agenda to the action portion for a brief clarification. Council members said the draft overlay identified a goal to "work with VDOT to reduce speed limits" on Lower South Church Street but did not explicitly reference adjacent sections; members asked the goal be applied more consistently along the corridor. "If we were going to have a goal to reduce that speed limit... it might be useful for it to be a little broader in application," a council member said.
Council voted to amend the document so the speed-reduction goal applies consistently across the corridor segments covered by the overlay and then approved the overlay and the updated zoning map as amended.
The council also approved three invoices over $20,000: $55,279.64 to East Coast Emergency Vehicles for outfitting police vehicles; $30,500 to Core & Main for water meter inventory; and $87,058.95 to Athens Building Court for boardwalk restoration at Windsor Castle Park. Those invoices were approved on the consent/finance action roll call.
Ending: Council members moved several items through with minor amendments and directed staff to continue coordination with VDOT on speed-limit matters and to proceed with the authorized purchases and restoration work.
