Lueder Family YMCA to offer 24-hour access starting June 16; YMCA leaders brief council

During the public-comment portion of the June 3 meeting, Anna Mae Morrow, executive director of the Lueder Family YMCA, announced the facility will begin offering 24-hour access to eligible members starting June 16.
"This move to 24 hour access is just one more way the Y is delivering on our promise to be for all every hour, every day," Morrow said. She said the benefit will be offered at no additional cost to current members and is available to all full members of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas aged 18 and over; members must opt in and update their photo and emergency contact information in person.
Morrow said as of the council meeting 248 members had signed up, and that the YMCA will retain daytime staffed hours and programming while extending unsupervised access for qualified members during off-hours. Dr. Herb Bevan, an advisory-board member, attended with Morrow and was cited by Morrow as a community advocate.
Council members noted the YMCA's change pairs with town sidewalk-extension work near the facility, which some said will improve safety during unlit hours.
Why it matters: Expanded hours aim to increase access for shift workers, parents and others who need off-hour fitness and wellness options. The change may increase evening pedestrian traffic and relates to town sidewalk and lighting improvements discussed at the meeting.
