The Board of Adjustment approved a variance, BOA2025-018, to allow Havertys Furniture to install a 286-square-foot wall sign on Unit 600 at International Speedway Square (2500 West International Speedway Boulevard), exceeding the city’s 200-square-foot wall-sign maximum. The vote was unanimous, 5-0.
Applicants argued the sign size is proportionate to the building’s large fascia and that existing landscaping, fronting parcels and distance from the highway limit visibility. Guy Wingo, representing the applicant, said the store’s branded lettering includes substantial negative space and that standard rectangular area calculations undercount the usable letter area for their logo. "We wanted to get the maximum amount of square footage to be able to be seen from that distance," said Guy Wingo.
Guy Hamill, representing Havertys Furniture, said the store’s branded configuration requires maintaining relative proportions; staff and the board discussed the letter height (about 20 inches for the smaller "furniture" copy) and estimated visibility at roughly 500–550 feet. The applicant provided alternative square-footage calculations that showed roughly 203 square feet if each spaced letter were measured individually, but the applicant requested a 286-square-foot allowance to preserve visual scale on the large building facade.
City staff and the PD representative confirmed the International Speedway Square planned commercial development copied the city’s business-district sign rules (2 sq. ft. per linear foot of frontage up to a 200-square-foot maximum). Board members said the proposed signage appeared proportionate to the building and, with no public opposition, moved to approve BOA2025-018. Roll-call votes were recorded in favor from Charles Cameron, Patrick Connors, Leon McCray, John George and David Betts.
The variance applies only to the signage square footage for the listed tenant and building elevation as presented.
