School committee considers tuition agreements with Quabbin-area districts

The North Brookfield School Committee heard an update on efforts to explore tuition agreements with nearby districts, including a presentation from the Quabbin Regional School District and preliminary interest from East Brookfield and Spencer. Committee members said the tuition-working group plans to reconvene on Sept. 13 and expects to bring a recommendation to the full committee by the October meeting.

The update matters because a tuition agreement would affect where some North Brookfield students attend school and how the district budgets for enrollment. The committee’s tuition subcommittee has been meeting through the summer to evaluate options and hear from potential receiving districts.

A committee member said Quabbin Regional School District’s superintendent visited and outlined what his district could offer. The same committee member reported that East Brookfield and Spencer expressed interest but indicated they were not ready to pursue an arrangement immediately because of internal priorities, including opening a new building. The committee member said, “if we were still looking down the line that he might be interested,” reflecting the superintendent’s comments to the subcommittee.

Committee participants agreed to a timetable: the tuition subcommittee will recap Quabbin’s presentation at its next meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13, and then prepare materials to share with the full school committee. The committee member leading the update said the subgroup hopes to present findings to the entire school committee by the October meeting. Meeting participants confirmed the subcommittee meetings are open to the public.

Discussion-only items included follow-up work the subcommittee needs to do: compile Quabbin’s materials, gather any additional district responses, and determine whether a joint meeting with other committees or school boards will be required. No formal action or vote on a tuition agreement was taken at the meeting.
