Pleasant Valley School District staff told the board during a working session that First Northern Bank has offered to sponsor a new digital scoreboard for the district stadium, with an estimated project cost of about $300,000 and installation scheduled after this athletics season. District staff asked the board to place a purchase agreement on the next public meeting agenda for formal approval.
The district presented two purchase options. Option 1 would finance the scoreboard through the vendor (Digital Signs Capital) with annual payments of $66,002.50 for five years for a total repayment amount that includes about $57,006.10 in interest, according to staff. Option 2 would pay the vendor upfront from the district’s capital reserve/CIP fund for a total of $273,640 and then replenish that fund over five years as First Northern’s installment payments are received.
Finance director Tammy (identified in the session as the district finance representative) and Superintendent Doctor Conrad recommended Option 2 so the district avoids paying interest. Board members asked whether the quoted price included installation, electrical upgrades, fiber pulls and a new sound system; staff said the vendor’s price covers installation and a new sound system, but there could be separate, limited electrical or fiber upgrades required in some situations. Staff also said the scoreboard has cellular monitoring so the vendor can detect faults and dispatch technicians remotely.
Board members raised implementation questions about whether the CIP payment would interfere with other planned capital projects if an emergency arose; staff said the upfront CIP payment would not delay planned CIP projects and that an emergency project would require reprioritizing the CIP as necessary. No formal vote was taken at the working session; staff will place the fully negotiated agreement on the next board meeting agenda for a public vote.
The sponsorship also includes community-engagement elements proposed by the district and the bank — examples mentioned were movie nights on the turf and curriculum tie-ins such as digital-media opportunities for students — and district staff said the partnership could create advertising revenue opportunities for the district and enhance graduation and game-day presentations.
