Johnson County on Sept. 8 approved an additional appropriation of $50,000 to the courthouse maintenance budget to cover utility expenses. Jason Miller, who identified himself as courthouse maintenance, told the council the request reflected higher-than-expected costs and characterized the number as his “best guess.”
Council members asked whether the estimate could be lower or higher; Miller said he hoped not to return for another request and that the county budget already included increases for 2026. The council voted to approve the appropriation after a motion by John Demmers and a second by Ron Bates.
The request was presented as a routine maintenance appropriation; staff said the funds would be used to cover utility shortfalls for the remainder of the year.
