County approves local matches to design three federally funded highway safety projects

Johnson County on Sept. 8 approved appropriations covering the local share of design contracts for three highway safety projects and accepted the associated federal-aid funds for the federal balance. Luke Masten, highway supervisor, told the council the projects are primarily federally funded and that design appropriations were needed to move forward.
Masten said the projects are funded about 90% by federal dollars and that the local appropriations cover the remaining design-phase costs. He described the work as focused on intersections with high turning volumes and crash rates and noted one project addresses sight-line problems at 300 West and 625 South. He also described “conflict warning” illuminated signs as a newer technology used to improve safety at certain intersections.
Council member John (unnamed in the transcript) asked about scrutiny for federally funded contracts; staff answered that the county must meet contract conditions and other federal requirements. The council approved items D5–D8 by motion from John Demmers with Jonathan Myers seconding; the measures passed by voice vote.
