District reports summer projects complete, lists remaining mechanical upgrades

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District's facilities director reported Aug. 19 that multiple summer projects funded by borough capital, impact aid and state DEED funds were completed and provided cost estimates and contractor names. Major items completed this summer include a full kitchen remodel and equipment replacement at Lathrop High School (Callahan Construction; estimate $2.2 million), University Park Elementary site improvements including parking and playground surfacing (Troast Construction; estimate $2.0 million) and a boiler replacement at North Pole High (Air and Plumbing and Heating; estimate $900,000, with additional mechanical upgrades needed). Remaining work and priorities: the director said North Pole High now has reliable new boilers but still requires mechanical controls replacement (pneumatic-to-DDC conversion), piping and possible glycol conversion to ensure consistent building control. She said the Weller Elementary fire-tank interior was recoated (You Can Fire Protection, estimate ~$109,000) and a limited roof patch at West Valley High was completed (Weatherproofing Technologies; estimate ~$79,000) with an expected useful life of roughly 10 years for the patch. Capital planning: the facilities director said the district is breaking larger renovation proposals into smaller, more specific K-12 capital improvement project (CIP) requests to better match borough funding priorities (roofing, windows, playgrounds, DDC controls). She provided a deferred-maintenance figure of roughly $350 million over a long-term projection and said she will seek a mix of borough KIP/kit funding and grants for playground and ADA improvements. Why it matters: the projects address immediate safety and accessibility needs and inform the district's CIP requests to the borough and state. Board members asked about ADA-specific playground surfacing at University Park and were told the SPED playground was not included this summer but will be proposed in a future kit project. Ending: Facilities staff will continue to prioritize urgent mechanical control conversions and ADA playground upgrades and will present refined CIP proposals by the Aug. 31 submission deadlines to borough and state funders.
