Sheriff—s office to use body cameras on campus only for police incidents, district says

Superintendent James Frenchini told the board the county sheriff—s office will begin wearing body cameras on district campuses starting with the upcoming school year, but said the devices will be activated only during police incidents on campus.
"It's only when there's a police incident on campus. That's when it'd be activated," Frenchini said. He said footage from those activations "becomes part of an instant case file" and is stored with court records; release of recordings will require an approval process through the sheriff—s office rather than being freely shared with district staff or parents.
Frenchini said the district had asked the sheriff—s office to wait until the start of the school year to implement cameras rather than activating them midyear, to allow a cleaner rollout. He described the district—s relationship with the county sheriff and with Deputy Debbie Nichols as "fantastic" and said he did not expect problems with the implementation.
The board received the informational update; no formal vote on a policy or contract took place during the meeting.
