Committee approves update to county road weight-limits ordinance to reflect recent upgrades

The McLean County Land Use and Transportation Committee voted unanimously on Sept. 2, 2025 to update the county ordinance that imposes weight limits on roads to reflect recent resurfacing, upgrades and truck-route designations. County highway staff said the update catalogs roads resurfaced or upgraded in the past two years to the 80,000-pound standard and incorporates roads that became Class 2 truck routes after receiving truck access route funds.
Jerry Stokes presented the update, saying the last ordinance revision occurred in September 2023 and that this update brings the ordinance into alignment with recent physical upgrades and federal/state expectations. During discussion a committee member joked about adjusting specific numeric thresholds, but no numeric changes beyond those described by staff were debated at the meeting.
Member Reeves moved the update forward and Member Leffler seconded; the committee voted "aye" and passed the ordinance update unanimously. Stokes said the update is primarily administrative, listing roads and weight classifications, and will help enforcement and permitting efforts.
