Parks director details campground electric sites, sewage plant walkthrough and Animal Services Building improvements

Mike Steffa, director of parks and recreation, told the McLean County Property Committee the department is seeking additional electrical hookups in the back part of the county campground and is soliciting quotes for security cameras and other work. “We are currently working on, getting some additional electric sites in the back part of the campground. I'm still waiting for some quotes to come in as well as some security cameras, 1 at the main entrance to the park and 1 at the main boat launch. I've had 1 quote come in waiting for 2 more,” Steffa said.
Steffa said department staff want to finalize quotes and complete work before colder weather arrives. He also reported a final walk-through of a sewage treatment plant is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22, and that the remaining work there is seating. “We're gonna do a final walk through on Monday, September 22, but really the only thing that needs to be done yet is the seating down there,” he said.
On the new Animal Services Building, Steffa described upcoming landscaping and accessibility work tied to a grant: he said the trail will be ADA accessible, include an accessible picnic table with a canopy shade structure and pollinator gardens. He also said the parks department plans to work with the U of I master naturalists and the Grand Prairie Bridal Alliance at West Park on Oct. 4. Staffing levels in parks were described as minimal for the season, and Steffa said the department is proceeding with planned maintenance and projects.
Committee members expressed support: one member said they were “really excited about that grant, for the Animal Services Building” and noted the trail and pollinator gardens.
