Rita Selbeck Lynch, Employment and Training Program Director, told the Planning and Economic Development Committee that recent program graduates include a single parent with a newborn who completed nursing training and received a job offer at a local hospital paying more than $40 an hour. "You can just imagine what it's like, trying to juggle a full time job, nursing school, and having an infant to care for as well," Selbeck Lynch said.
Selbeck Lynch described the program's case management approach and several other outcomes. She said the county used a $5,000 award from the Allegany County Area Foundation to fund five people in training, all of whom completed their coursework and are working toward employment. She also said two youth completed phlebotomy training and are now seeking jobs in that field. "We used $5,000 to fund 5 people, in different occupations and all of them completed their training," Selbeck Lynch said.
She said many recent graduates are waiting to take professional certification exams but some have already found employment before receiving final credentials. Selbeck Lynch highlighted healthcare as a demand occupation and noted starting wages in some local health jobs are high enough to be life‑changing for participants.
The committee requested ongoing success reports; Selbeck Lynch said she will continue to send success stories as they occur.
