Committee approves design work for jail HVAC and funds security door/fob upgrades from public safety funds

LaSalle County’s Finance Committee approved paying for design engineering work on a planned replacement of the jail air‑conditioning system and agreed to fund security‑related door and fob upgrades from public safety funds, the committee said Aug. 12.
Committee members and county staff said the jail’s HVAC system is failing and a full replacement could cost in the range of $800,000 to $900,000. County staff requested approval to engage an architect/engineer for the design phase so the project can be bid next year. The committee approved proceeding with design engineering and to cover design costs from the public safety fund, while the full construction cost will be budgeted in the next fiscal year. Committee chair Doug Treggor confirmed the decision by calling for a motion: "Can I have a motion to go ahead with the design engineering work for the veil air conditioning and pay for it out of public safety?" The motion was made and seconded and the committee voted in favor.
Separately, the committee approved spending roughly $27,000 for door replacements and access fobs to improve security at the downtown courthouse and the State's Attorney’s office entry. County staff said the additional door and fob infrastructure—including a panic button and restricted access to attorney areas—was intended to reduce unsupervised public access. The committee approved the measure and directed the county to finalize the contract for payment from fund 33 (public safety).
Committee members noted that only a portion of engineering fees would be due in the current fiscal year and that the bulk of construction costs would be budgeted for the following year. County staff will return with firm contract terms and cost breakdowns for professional services and construction estimates.
