The Ordinance Committee on June 30 approved adding a "Do Not Block the Box" marking and signage for the southbound approach at the intersection of Broadway and Reuben Avenue, following a constituent complaint about driveway access and engineering review.
Councilor George Balakir, who filed the order, attended and spoke in support, saying a constituent, Tina Hammond, was having difficulty exiting a driveway where Reuben Avenue meets Broadway. Balakir told the committee that the location is congested when vehicles block the intersection and that one resident had been clipped while trying to turn.
City Engineer Doug Ellis reviewed the proposed ordinance with the filer and approved the draft wording, according to the engineering comments read into the record. The committee asked for public input; Balakir provided the only public comment. After closing public input, the committee voted 5-0 to approve the order and forward it to the full City Council.
The action adds language to the municipal parking/traffic schedule under the city's referenced code (chapter 2-60 as amended on 02/21/1995). The committee did not direct additional study; the item will appear before the full City Council at its next meeting.
