The Garden City Appointments Committee on Aug. 26 recommended the full council confirm Mayor’s reappointment of Mario Gue to the Board of Registrars. The mayor said Gue, who was not present, was first appointed in February 2013 and “has served again for several years on this position,” adding that the city clerk has “enjoyed working with him as well in this role through the election process.”
Under the general laws of the Commonwealth, the mayor said, the Board of Registrars must have as close to an equal makeup of the major political parties as possible; the board includes three mayoral appointees plus the city clerk as an ex officio voting fourth member. The mayor identified Gue as one of the two Republican members, with Patricia Darby as the other Republican member and Marcel Cormier as the Democratic member; T. Sarafin was named as the city clerk and ex officio voter.
Councilor Hagelin moved that the committee recommend the mayor’s reappointment to the full council; Councilor Kuzinski seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Why it matters: The Board of Registrars oversees local election administration and voter registration; maintaining required party balance is a statutory requirement for the board’s composition. The committee’s recommendation means the reappointment will be considered by the full council for final confirmation.
The committee recorded no objections in committee discussion; the nominee was not present to speak.
