Council confirms police officer Russell Counts; oath administered during meeting

The Gardner City Council confirmed Russell Counts as a police officer and recessed briefly so the city clerk could administer the oath of office.
Councilor Heath, speaking for the appointments committee, said Counts brings 14 years of policing experience and that the hire is the first since the city moved away from civil-service hiring for the Gardner Police Department. The appointments committee had met with Chief McAvine and Counts prior to forwarding the appointment to the full council.
The council recessed momentarily and returned after the oath was administered; no objection to the appointment was recorded.
