City economic-development director reports staffing additions and Mackie Park plan progress

At a Sept. 2 council meeting, Councilor Kazantzakis summarized an economic and community development committee update from Director Stevens, noting staff additions and renewed progress on stalled projects including Mackie Park.
Kazantzakis said the department's new assistant director, Amy Uhas, brought community development block grant experience and had already closed out longstanding backlog items within weeks of starting. The department also filled a new business manager position, which the director reported is inventorying available commercial spaces to support outreach and business retention.
On Mackie Park, Kazantzakis said the director and mayor addressed previous impediments and expect work to begin around October. The committee also discussed staffing constraints at the regional planning commission (MRPC) that had delayed training for the city's new staff; the director said MRPC would resume training once staffing stabilizes.
The council voted to place the update on file.
