City of Sandy previews summer events, camps and concerts
Summary
City of Sandy staff presented a summer schedule of community events, youth camps, concerts and ongoing classes at the March 14 Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meeting, and said registration information will be shared for programs that are not yet shown on the website.
City of Sandy Parks & Recreation staff gave the board an overview of the department’s planned summer programming during the March 14 meeting.
The presentation listed May community gatherings including “Yappy Hour,” described as the city’s canine carnival and the reopening celebration for a refurbished dog park at Bluff Park; a free film event about pollinators; and early-summer activities such as the Longest Day Parkway neighborhood walk, a 5K called Noah’s Quest, a senior barbecue, July 4 fireworks and a slate of children’s events tied to the Mountain Festival (pet show, bike derby and kids parade). Concerts are planned at Meining Park featuring Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts and a Jukebox Heroes tribute band; the outdoor movie schedule includes The Wild Robot, The Goonies and Wicked.
The presenter said the department will offer swim lessons, open swim passes and senior water aerobics in partnership with Mount Hood Athletic Club, and will continue piano, dance, science and cooking classes at the community center. Two week-long youth sports camps run by i9 Sports are planned, and the department will run youth bike camps in partnership with Northwest Trails Alliance; staff said Carol Cohen is pursuing certification to coach those camps in-house. The presentation also noted ongoing programs including an adult coed softball league, community gardens and the Bee City Action Group. A youth “Kitty Cross” event will run at Leopold’s farm alongside the Corn Cross activities.
A board member asked about registration for Noah’s Quest; staff said registration this year uses a different process, that the event has been promoted on Facebook and that staff would email the registration link after the meeting and review the city website to ensure the listing is easy to find.
Staff noted that recreation guides are available online and in hard copy at the library, city hall and the community and senior center. The presenter also credited recreation coordinators Carol Cohen and Amy Lytle for organizing many of the events and thanked other staff including the parks maintenance crew for event support.
Board members praised the department’s output and encouraged promotion of events and registration links.
Questions: A board member asked whether Noah’s Quest registration was visible on the website; staff pledged to share the link and check the site. No formal action was taken on the programming presentation.
