Parks staff announce volunteer invasive-plant removal, Meals on Wheels fundraiser and summer programming plans

Parks staff reported several operational updates at the Sandy Parks and Trails Advisory Board meeting, including a volunteer invasive-plant removal event, a certification milestone, fundraising for the Meals on Wheels program and summer programming planning.
Tianna, a parks recreation staff member, congratulated Brandon on passing the exams needed for a pesticide applicator license, saying the city will now have “our first licensed staff member within the city of Sandy Parks team.” Tianna also announced a volunteer opportunity on March 4 in partnership with the Clackamas River Basin to remove invasive species along the Tickle Creek Trail Corridor and plant trees and shrubs as part of a supplemental environmental project with public works.
On senior services, staff outlined the second annual March for Meals campaign to support the local Meals on Wheels nutrition program for homebound seniors. Staff said the campaign pairs raffle-basket fundraisers, partnerships with six local restaurants that will donate a percentage of proceeds on designated nights, and cross-generational meals where seniors may attend with family. Tianna said the city raised a little over $3,000 during last year’s March for Meals.
Recreation staff said they are planning summer programs, finalizing day-camp contractors and booking bands for the concert series; staff mentioned outreach to touring acts and a potential tribute band and other performers being considered.
Staff also said they are installing key boxes and preparing directions to improve first-responder access to restrooms after hours, an operational change prompted by recent incidents in parks. Tianna said staff will distribute a QR sign-up code for the March 4 volunteer event to the board members by email.
