The commission heard that Prospector Park drainage work is at the punch‑list phase and multiple upgrades at the Aquatic Center, Superstition Shadows Park and other sites are scheduled this fall and winter.
City parks superintendent Dave Butler said the restroom construction is functionally complete. “We are waiting on a final permit and a certificate of occupancy to get in to open the restroom, but it's done. It's hooked up. Water is running. Electric works,” Butler said.
The update described a series of near‑term and planned projects: replacement of a fence and masonry wall and recoating of pool decks and slides at the Aquatic Center beginning Oct. 1; interior repainting of the Multi‑Generational Center; roughly 4,500 square feet of new shade structures at the pool; nearly 6,000 square feet of shade and new playground features at Superstition Shadows Park; replacement of about 39–42 light poles with dark‑sky‑compliant LED heads at Superstition Shadows (phase 2 of a lighting project); and replacement of eight Ramadas at that park later this year.
Staff also reported grant‑funded shade at Prospector Park covering roughly 7,000 square feet across two playgrounds, with an anticipated installation window around December and a grant completion deadline in February. Contractors are in ongoing negotiations for work at the rodeo grounds and for pickleball courts at Prospector Park; no firm schedules were available.
Commissioners and staff discussed details of the Ramada replacements (like‑for‑like replacement because support structures had rusted through) and the distribution of shade across playground areas. The report emphasized that some projects are constrained by grant deadlines and contract negotiations, and that certain items such as the Prospector playground shade must be completed by the grant’s required date.
The commission did not take formal votes on these project updates; staff presented timelines and asked for questions. The department said it will return to the commission with photographs and updated schedules as punch lists close, permits are received and contracts are executed.
The staff presentation and follow‑up questions occupied a substantive portion of the meeting and set expectations for multiple construction and maintenance items through the end of the calendar year.
