A sheriff's office representative told the Public Safety Advisory Committee on June 6 that deputies conducted a multi-hour retail-theft operation at the Fairview Target that resulted in six arrests and the recovery of about $2,000 in stolen property.
That same speaker said the sheriff's office has been handling two officer-involved shootings that occurred on consecutive Fridays elsewhere in the county and are under active investigation. "The involved deputies are doing well and are off work and expected to after everything is investigated, then, we'll see where everything's at," the representative said.
Why it matters: the enforcement activity and the shootings both affect patrol staffing and community safety. The committee was told the shootings have reduced patrol capacity, necessitating mandatory overtime and temporary reassignments.
Details from the sheriff's office report: the department logged 583 calls for service during the reporting period. The retail-theft detail at the Fairview Target lasted several hours; the department said it arrested six people — "3 of them were felonies, and 3 of them were misdemeanors" — and recovered multiple items valued in total at roughly $2,000. The office described the Target operation as done in partnership with Target's loss-prevention staff; the department said enforcement operations are generally coordinated with the store and are not publicly preannounced.
Committee discussion focused on staffing effects. Committee members noted the department's staffing shortage and asked whether the temporary administrative status of deputies involved in the investigations would affect coverage. The sheriff's office representative replied that staffing has been strained and that patrol supervisors and other personnel have been filling gaps, including working extra shifts.
There were no formal actions tied to the report during the meeting. The sheriff's office said investigations remain active and gave no timetable for release of additional details.
