Committee hears $25,000 capital line item added to parks budget; no staff increases

Fairview Park and Recreation Advisory Committee members were briefed on the city’s budget action that included a $25,000 capital line item for parks and a plan to send the budget to formal adoption on Wednesday, June 4.
John, a city staff member, told the committee, “What we did approve is a $25,000 capital line item, and that was could be used for, you know, grants … it was just a broad kind of line item, so it can be used, for grant purposes also.” John said the parks budget did not experience cuts but that the department did not secure additional staff positions.
Committee members were told the parks staff currently consists of three employees who maintain more than 100 acres of parkland, including storm-swale areas. John said the committee’s recommendation in the budget hearing helped secure the capital line item.
Chair Bob Goffman thanked Vice Chair Ben Pointer for attending the budget hearing and noted the committee’s support was helpful during the review process. John said the budget will proceed to adoption on June 4, and committee members agreed to monitor implementation and any grant applications that might use the new capital line item.
