Council accepts $60,000 in highway safety grants to fund enforcement overtime

The Apache Junction City Council unanimously approved Resolution 25-25 on Sept. 2 to accept $60,000 in grant funding from the Arizona 2026 Highway Safety Plan to reimburse police overtime for enforcement programs. Lieutenant Seth Painter said the awards include $25,000 for DUI enforcement overtime, $25,000 for general traffic enforcement overtime, $5,000 for bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement and $5,000 for car-seat and seat-belt enforcement overtime.
Painter said the grants are reimbursable and are the same types the department typically receives; staff requested authority to begin using the funds under standard grant reimbursement procedures. Council approved the resolution on a roll-call vote and thanked the police department for pursuing external grant funding.
The funding will reimburse overtime hours for enforcement campaigns and will be used under the terms of the Arizona Highway Safety Plan grants; program details and reimbursement procedures will follow state grant requirements.
