Council approves $158,631 contract for playground shade at Prospector Park

The Apache Junction City Council on Sept. 2 approved an award of contract to Shade Industries for shade structures at Prospector Park playground areas. Park Superintendent Dave Butler said the work is funded through the city's CDBG regional account and will provide roughly 7,000 square feet of shade covering the north and south playgrounds.
Shade Industries was the lowest responsive bidder on the invitation for bid; the base award is $144,210 with a 10% contingency for a total not to exceed $158,631. Staff said the construction is expected to be complete by early February 2026. Butler said the shade fabric type is consistent with other city playground and pool installations and typically has a service life of roughly 10 to 15 years depending on weather and monsoon exposure; warranty details will be provided after contract award.
Council approved the contract on a recorded roll call. The project is part of a CDBG-funded set of park improvements previously discussed during the meeting's CDBG presentation.
