Veterans Assistance Commission Reports Increased Need, Higher Disbursements

Cheryl Walker, superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC), told the Champaign County Board that the VAC is seeing higher demand and rising assistance costs and asked for continued county support.
Walker said the VAC recorded 137 phone calls and 54 office visits in the prior month, with total assistance disbursements of $6,243.73. She detailed how that total was allocated: $4,364 in rent, $250 in mortgage assistance, $1,629.73 for utilities and a $50 food gift certificate. She also reported one burial claim and multiple other assistance items such as medical-record assistance and general casework.
"We've had an increase in uptake in veterans who need assistance due to the political climate... and the financial situation that they find themselves in," Walker said. Board members thanked Walker for the work of the VAC and expressed appreciation for her management of the program. No formal action or new appropriation was taken during the hearing; the presentation was recorded as part of the FY26 budget review.
