Kane County proclaims Emergency Management Awareness Month, honors citizen heroes and probation officer

At its Aug. 12 meeting the Kane County Board issued proclamations and presented awards recognizing local emergency-management volunteers and several citizens for acts of public service.
Emergency management: Scott Bzecki, of the Kane County Office of Emergency Management, joined the board to accept a proclamation designating August as National Emergency Management Awareness Month. Bzecki described coordinated volunteer training, continuity-of-operations planning and the office—s look-alike public education work; the board recognized the office—s 6 staff and roughly 70 volunteers who support local response and recovery operations.
Citizen bravery and assistance: Sheriff Ron Haynes and undersheriff Amy Johnson presented awards to citizens whose timely actions assisted law enforcement. Eight-year-old Ace Holder was recognized for dialing 911 and helping first responders after his grandmother collapsed; the board presented an honorary junior-deputy certificate and Ace recited an oath: "I, Ace Holder, promise to always be kind and help others, do my homework, and to listen to my parents." The board also recognized Nathan Munz and Landon Whiteman for restraining a fleeing suspect until deputies arrived; the county credited their actions with aiding an arrest.
Court services recognition: The board proclaimed National Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week and named Kim Reed, a senior probation officer, as the Court Services Probation Officer of the Year as nominated by her peers. Court officials and the chief judge joined the board in commending probation staff for supervising adults and juveniles and assisting reentry efforts.
Actions: Each proclamation was approved by majority roll call votes; the board recorded the proclamations and made photo presentations with officials and honorees.
Ending: Board members used the recognition segment to underscore the role of volunteers and civilian actions that supplement county public safety and court services, and to encourage residents to participate in preparedness and community safety programs.
