Local dump-truck operator urges city to steer contracts to certified minority-owned firm

Steve Stevenson, owner of Stevenson Corp., used the meeting’s public-comment period to ask city officials for help getting regular municipal work for his two-dump-truck hauling business.
Stevenson said his firm has been operating for about a year and holds WBE and MBE certifications. “I'm trying to build wealth for my family … I'm not trying to be out here selling drugs or doing no crazy crap like that. I'm trying to earn a real living,” Stevenson said.
The committee’s chair responded that the city has resources for certified businesses and directed staff to follow up. A staff member, Alex Stanton, was identified in the room and the chair told Stevenson to meet with Stanton after the meeting to discuss contracting opportunities and the city's vendor lists.
Stevenson said he had spoken last year with Mayor Aftab, who suggested certified firms could receive consideration for city jobs; the committee chair said staff would follow up on that conversation. The public comment lasted the allotted two minutes and concluded without formal action. Stevenson said he planned to return to the full City Council meeting the following day.
Next steps: staff member Alex Stanton is to meet Stevenson after the session; the city will make an appointment to review available resources and vendor lists for certified businesses.
