City Council confirmed Anthony Covington as clerk of council designate and appointed him to the clerk position effective Nov. 1, 2025, contingent on a training period.
Vice Mayor Kearney introduced the item and moved for immediate consideration so Covington could begin training with incumbent Clerk of Council Melissa Autry before her retirement. “We would like for him to start training this Monday,” Kearney said, and noted the selection committee reviewed 122 applications for the position.
The ordinance appoints Anthony J. Covington as clerk of council designate beginning Monday, Sept. 22, 2025 through Oct. 31, 2025 for the purpose of training with Clerk Melissa Autry before her retirement, and then appoints him to the clerk position beginning Nov. 1, 2025 through the end of the current council term.
Council recorded a roll-call vote to approve immediate consideration and then a separate roll call to confirm the appointment; votes were recorded in favor across the council. The motion for immediate consideration was seconded by Council member Scottie Johnson. Council thanked the selection committee, which included Melissa Autry, the director of human resources, the city solicitor, and several council members.
