District advances memorandum of understanding with Ho-Chunk Nation to support students

Dr. Kristin Mueller, district administrator for the School District of Hohman, told the board the district is advancing a memorandum of understanding with the Ho-Chunk Nation to strengthen services for students who are members of that nation and to formalize a district partnership.
Why it matters: the MOU would establish a formal working relationship allowing Ho-Chunk Nation staff to provide tutoring, cultural mentorship and advocacy on district grounds and to collaborate with district staff to support Ho-Chunk Nation students and families.
Mueller said the district has worked with the Ho-Chunk Nation and has conducted visits; the proposed MOU would allow the nation to bring staff onto district campuses to collaborate with school staff and provide the services described. "We are continually working hard to build and, enhance our relationships with other organizations to better serve our students," Mueller said.
Board members asked whether the MOU related to state Act 31 or to a particular Ho-Chunk youth center; Mueller said the agreement is a direct partnership with the Ho-Chunk Nation based in Black River Falls and that the district has had previous partnerships of different kinds with nearby school districts.
No formal approval occurred at the meeting; Mueller said the MOU will be on the Sept. 22 consent agenda for the board to sign after the Ho-Chunk Nation's leadership signs on their side.
