District to expand course-planner and community outreach for academic-career planning

Jennifer Gimmer, director of safety and student services for the School District of Hohman, told the board the district will expand academic-career planning and workforce partnerships starting this school year and pilot a course-planner tool at the high school.
Why it matters: ACP and Education for Employment plans are annual requirements intended to help students plan for postsecondary education and careers; changes affect counseling, course access and district-community partnerships.
Gimmer said the district already embeds ACP work in elementary grades and emphasizes early exposure to career concepts. "The purpose behind them is to ensure that students in grades 6 through 12, assist them in planning and preparing for opportunities post high school," she said.
Key changes this year include piloting course planner integrated with the student information system (Infinite Campus) at the high school so students' course selections automatically populate individual plans and schedules. Gimmer described the course-planner rollout as a potential "game changer" for counselors and students because it allows planning to be reflected in scheduling and course access.
The district will continue using Xello while introducing course planner and will extend the tool to middle school if the pilot succeeds. Gimmer also said the ACP/E4E team will work with Travis, the district communications specialist, to publicize existing programs and build community partnerships; the current career-readiness team is district-staffed and lacks community members, an item the district plans to address.
No formal action was taken; the ACP and E4E plan will appear on the Sept. 22 consent agenda for approval.
