Mayor Stehr announced Monday that he has selected 24 high school students to serve on Zionsville's mayoral youth advisory council, a new panel that will meet twice a month beginning Aug. 28 and run through the school year. "We've chosen 24 high school students this year to take part between now and the end of the school year," Mayor Stehr said.
The students represent Zionsville, Reboff, Covenant Christian and University high schools as well as the homeschool community, Mayor Stehr said. He told the council some of the students were in the chamber that morning and said the council met informally the previous day for a social orientation.
The council's stated aims are to familiarize students with local government and to support the students as they develop and carry out a community service project they will select in coming weeks, Mayor Stehr said. "We hope to familiarize them with how their local government works and also help them with a community service project that they will choose," he said.
The mayor thanked the students for attending before the school day and asked councilors to meet them as they arrived. No formal action or vote was recorded on the advisory council during the meeting.
