Arlington schools open 2025–26 after summer hiring, repairs and community partnerships

Arlington Public Schools reported a largely smooth start to the 2025–26 school year and outlined summer work to prepare buildings, hire staff and restore programs. District leaders described new hires, building repairs, ongoing portable work at the Steely Valley Learning Center (SVLC) and a joint city–county pickleball court project next to Howard Elementary.

Why it matters: The district told the board the summer’s staffing, construction and outreach work are intended to reduce disruption for students and families on the first day and to meet special education and operational needs that affect classroom readiness.

District officials said they recruited a large cohort of certificated and classified staff over the summer. Superintendent Sweet reported about 30 certificated staff attended new‑teacher orientation and about a dozen classified staff attended their orientation; the district estimated total new hires this summer at roughly 50. Officials said some positions remain posted to meet individual student needs (for example one‑to‑one aides tied to IEPs).

Facilities work described at the meeting included roof and window repairs, siding work and a new cold‑storage unit at one elementary school (furniture remains in temporary portables while the unit is finished). Board members were shown photos taken during staff orientation and at school openings to illustrate classroom and building updates.

The board was updated on the Steely Valley Learning Center (SVLC) project: portables are nearly ready but some spaces remain in temporary locations while final work continues. District staff said new ramps are close to completion but not fully finished.

Board members were told the district is partnering with the city and county to build a pickleball court on land next to Howard Elementary; the county provided the majority of the funding and the city contributed additional funds. District staff called the project a joint partnership and said it remains under construction.

District leaders also recapped community engagement events that supported students this summer, including multiple resource fairs and a district food drive. District day — a start‑of‑year all‑staff gathering — included a welcome from Stillaguamish tribal leaders and a district food donation of more than 800 pounds to the food bank, officials said.

The presentation included a series of school‑level photos and descriptions of first‑week activities at Arlington High School, Howard, Pioneer, Kip Prairie, Eagle Creek and other schools; principals and staff were shown greeting students, running orientations and supporting school kickoff events.

Looking ahead, the presenters said remaining summer tasks include completing portables and finalizing the cold‑storage expansion. No formal board action was required for the facilities updates; the items were presented for information.
