Board approves high-school traffic and student-movement study, green-lights capital maintenance list (field-house item removed)

The Waunakee school board at its Sept. 8 meeting approved two facility-related actions brought forward by the facilities committee: a site civil and traffic study of the high school/middle school campus, and a capital maintenance package (with one item pulled for additional review).

Steve, speaking for the facility committee, said the engineering study will use the district’s local civil engineer (Roxanne Johnson) and the same traffic-engineering team that reviewed earlier site work. The study will evaluate student movement and vehicular traffic flow between the existing high school and middle school buildings and return recommendations this fall for potential changes to implement in summer 2026. Committee materials flagged possible outcomes such as gating off portions of Community Drive during school hours as one example of a recommended change.

The facility committee recommended approval on a 3–0 vote; the full board then approved the study by voice vote. The committee also forwarded a list of capital maintenance requests for board approval but removed the high school field-house basketball equipment item so administration could review quotes and return a recommendation; the remainder of the maintenance list was approved on a 3–0 committee vote and confirmed by the full board.

Why it matters: The study aims to improve student safety and campus circulation ahead of ongoing high school and middle school campus transitions. Capital maintenance approvals address building needs; the field-house equipment item was deferred to allow more review of specifications and pricing.

Next steps: The engineering team will report to the facilities committee later this fall with findings and recommendations; administrators will return revised quotes and recommendations for the field-house basketball item when available.
