Board approves small attendance-boundary change near Callahan Road

Doctor Stanley asked the school board to approve a change to an elementary attendance boundary near the corner of Callahan Road and Route 24 that will reassign property from Yellow Branch Elementary to Rustburg Elementary to account for an anticipated single-family development. Stanley said the district identified one family currently enrolled at Yellow Branch who lives in the affected area; he said that family had been told they could remain at Yellow Branch but would be responsible for their own transportation. The board voted to approve the boundary change at the meeting. There was no extended public hearing on the item at the meeting. Board members asked a few clarifying questions about the parcel’s location relative to Rushburg (Rustburg) and Yellow Branch; Stanley said the change is being made proactively ahead of construction. A motion to approve the change passed after the board indicated unanimous assent by saying “aye.” The board did not specify motion/second names or produce a roll-call vote sheet in the public discussion; district staff will implement the boundary adjustment ahead of expected development.
