The Lakewood Youth Council reported to the City Council on Sept. 2 that membership has grown substantially for the 2025–26 year and outlined planned community activities and organizational changes.
Elijah Sanna, chair of the Lakewood Youth Council, told the council the group elected a new board in June and held a kickoff event attended by about 35 students. “So far, we’ve had a pretty productive start to the year,” Sanna said. He and fellow youth leaders listed board officers and roles and described recent work with staff to finalize a new manual and organize meetings.
Irie Henkel, vice chair, said membership rose from 34 last year to 56 this year, calling the increase about a 155 percent rise since 2017 and noting a compound annual growth rate of roughly 12.3 percent over nine years. The council plans volunteer engagement across Lakewood, including Truck and Tractor Day and the Christmas parade; communications manager Natalie said the council will continue using GroupMe as its primary communications tool after member feedback.
Why it matters: The youth council is an advisory and engagement body that connects students with council work, civic education and volunteer opportunities. Council members thanked the students and encouraged continued participation and mentorship from alumni.
Next steps: The youth council will continue its yearly calendar of service and civic activities, provide periodic updates to the council and coordinate participation in city events.
