Mayor schedules budget meetings; Baird to present financial management plan Sept. 16

Mayor Smith told the council Tuesday that staff and the mayor agreed to schedule additional budget meetings this fall. The first of those meetings will take place on Sept. 16 to coincide with a presentation from the city’s financial advisors, Baird, on the financial management plan. Mayor Smith said that meeting will include discussion of utilities, tax-increment financing (TIF) and transit budgets.
Why it matters: Council members will review parts of the 2026 budget in separate work sessions to help streamline final adoption and to align those reviews with the financial-advisor presentation.
Mayor Smith said the second budget meeting focused on personnel will be on Oct. 14. He asked council members to plan for a longer Sept. 16 meeting because of the advisor presentation and noted that utilities, TIF and transit should be shorter agenda items compared with personnel or capital discussions.
Next steps: Staff will provide materials and the financial-advisor presentation at the Sept. 16 meeting; the personnel budget review is slated for Oct. 14. The mayor said the city may schedule additional meetings if necessary.
