SAISD says construction to start soon at Crockett Elementary; multiple bond projects on schedule

SAN ANGELO, Texas — San Angelo ISD staff told the board at its pre‑agenda meeting that the district’s 2025 bond program is on schedule and that construction on Crockett Elementary is the first project expected to reach active site work. RJ Lopez, a district staff member who presented the update, said Lee Lewis has been selected as the general contractor for Crockett and the district expects construction to finish in August 2026.
Why it matters: The bond package funds multiple school rebuilds and large upgrades across the district. A timely start to the first project affects permitting, contractor scheduling and the district’s ability to sequence sites for construction and occupancy.
District staff provided a slide‑by‑slide project status report that lists architects, current design phases and estimated completion dates. Lopez said Crockett is “100% complete in the bidding process” and that Lee Lewis has been selected; he added, “Exciting. We get to start construction on Crockett Elementary.” McGill is at 100% schematic design with work planned to move drawings from 2D schematic views toward more detailed 3D massing and finish layouts.
Larger campus projects — Glenview Middle School, Lakeview and Central — are in schematic design. Staff described site surveys, coordination of construction manager‑at‑risk (CMAR) selection, walk‑throughs with principals and campus leadership to verify scope, and planned visits to recently built example campuses so district staff, teachers and maintenance personnel can observe layouts, systems and maintenance implications.
Lakeview’s estimated completion date was presented as January 2028. Central and Glenview are progressing through survey coordination and CMAR request‑for‑proposals; Central’s team is arranging visits to example theaters, competition gyms and culinary spaces to inform programming.
Board and staff emphasized standardization opportunities where appropriate (ceiling tiles, carpet, equipment) to promote economies of scale for purchasing and long‑term maintenance, while preserving each campus’s individual identity. Staff also said they will continue to coordinate with the city on permitting and to notify the board of any changes to schedules or costs.
