Representatives of Scouting America and local scout volunteers addressed the board to describe scouting’s influence on youth development and to thank Union County Public Schools for existing partnerships that allow recruitment and outreach in schools.
Jerry Simpson, addressing the board and Superintendent Houlihan, described published studies that he said show scouting improves academic performance, self‑esteem and social skills and argued that exposure to scouting encourages civic‑minded and service‑oriented behavior. "When joining scouting, each member is required to learn the scout oath," Simpson said, emphasizing character development, leadership and citizenship.
Baxter Stegall, who identified himself as the district chair supporting scouting in Union and Anson counties and an Eagle Scout, spoke about the local partnership and recruiting efforts. He said scouting offers leadership development and invited board members and audience members to an Eagle Scout Board of Review at the VFW Hall in Indian Trail.
Both speakers thanked the district and administrators for opportunities to recruit in schools. No formal action was taken during the meeting on scouting access or curriculum; the presentations were made during the public‑comment portion of the session.
