Flooding damages Blackhawk Park access; camping suspended while engineers assess repairs

Blackhawk County Conservation Director Mike Henderson told supervisors Aug. 26 that flooding damaged the downstream wall and a section of the access road at Blackhawk Park, and that the county will suspend camping there while engineers evaluate repairs.
Henderson said the Cedar Falls scale reading reached about 91 feet during a recent flood; as the water receded he inspected the park and found the downstream wall over Snag Creek had failed and removed a large chunk of the road. He said the structure may be many decades old and that the county will not allow traffic across the damaged area until an engineer provides a safety assessment.
Henderson said the rest of the park should be usable for day visitors if weather holds and engineers may arrive before the coming weekend to provide preliminary ideas and cost estimates. He said staff will explore a temporary "band aid" fix to make the road safe through the fall and will consider a larger reconstruction in a future budget cycle.
The board did not take formal action beyond receiving the report. Conservation staff said they had sent photos to county staff and were coordinating an engineer visit to provide preliminary numbers for repairs.
