Council members introduced a 10‑year lease allowing Merritt House Realty to use and maintain parking spaces behind a downtown building the company purchased.
A staff member said Merritt House Realty had purchased the building formerly occupied by Rainey's Beauty and plans to use the site for real estate sales and classes. Under the proposed lease, Merritt House would resurface and stripe the lot, keep it maintained, and pay $1 per year in rent. The lease includes an option to renew after the initial 10‑year term.
Staff framed the agreement as a low‑cost way for the city to transfer upkeep responsibility for the space while supporting downtown business activity. Council scheduled the lease for consideration on the Sept. 15 agenda for further action.
Why it matters: The lease shifts maintenance obligations to a private owner expanding downtown operations and preserves public resources by reducing city maintenance demands.
