Petitioner Lee Pentross told the Transportation Safety Committee on Sept. 10 that delivery and commercial vehicles frequently pull up onto the berm and sidewalk along a long stretch between Manton Road and the Avery parking lot, at times mounting the curb and damaging landscaping. The petitioner asked the town to prohibit parking in the identified segment and requested physical deterrents such as small trees in the berm.
Committee members examined photos and discussed locations for regulatory signage and for small plantings that might discourage vehicles from driving onto the berm. Staff confirmed the berm area is town property, and the committee said the town can install signage and work with the forestry/parks unit on planting. The committee voted to create a no‑parking regulation from Manton Road to the identified utility pole location, subject to engineering confirming sign placement.
Nut graf: the committee’s vote will allow DPW engineering to place official no‑parking signs at specific locations along the Avery‑Manton stretch; staff will coordinate with forestry on physical plantings and will schedule sign installation once the regulation and exact locations are approved.
The petitioner described repeated instances in which UPS, FedEx and Amazon drivers braked and left trucks on the sidewalk and berm, sometimes obstructing pedestrian paths and creating a safety hazard. Committee members cautioned that private delivery drivers sometimes ignore signage, but said signage and a physical planting approach should reduce occurrences and protect the berm.
Ending: engineering will finalize the exact sign locations, staff will present the regulatory language and locations as required, and DPW will return to the committee with a plan for sign installation and any proposed plantings.
