Commissioners recommend renewals for several expired conditional use permits while urging compliance and property upkeep

After reviewing outreach to state and local assistance programs, a planning commission subcommittee told colleagues that no immediate federal, state or local program would enable several residents with expired conditional use permits (CUPs) to obtain permanent housing solutions.
Commissioner Rausch read Social Services correspondence stating the agency had no programs to provide building or refurbishment for these situations and that local affordable housing wait lists are long. Based on that assessment the subcommittee recommended renewing the CUPs and added that renewals include mandatory conditions for property maintenance and cleanliness.
Commissioners discussed differences among the cases: one property had a prior house fire and a temporary travel trailer on site (CUP 18), another had demonstrated dilapidation and a death in the household (CUP 20), and a third (CUP 17) was described as out of compliance. Commissioners agreed renewals should be conditioned on compliance steps and that staff would follow up on violations, applications and documentation.
Next steps: Affected property owners must file renewal applications; staff will continue enforcement where properties remain nonconforming and will check on pump-and-haul arrangements where required. The commission’s subcommittee recommended granting renewals where applicants show intent to bring properties into compliance and asked staff to present conditions.
