Solid waste staff report surplus-property question and Grizzly grapple motor repair under warranty

Bonner County solid waste staff briefly updated commissioners on surplus-property disposition options and equipment maintenance at the Oct. 5 workshop.
The surplus-item topic was raised to determine whether the solid waste enterprise could sell or otherwise dispose of surplus equipment independently or whether the disposal must follow a countywide legal process. The question was identified as a legal one; staff said they will seek counsel on the proper process.
Staff also reported a mechanical failure on a piece of equipment used at county sites: the rotator/orbital motor on a Grizzly (a material-processing grapple) failed. Galt said she contacted Grizzly and the vendor is shipping a replacement under warranty; staff provided photos of a leaky grapple earlier in the season and said warranty coverage extends through December. The department discussed the possibility of rebuilding returned parts as spares but noted there is a rebuilding cost.
No formal decisions were made. Commissioners asked staff to confirm the legal disposition process for surplus items and to proceed with warranty replacement for the Grizzly motor.
