At a meeting of the Trails and Greenway Advisory Committee, Public Works Superintendent Craig Lauer said the committee would defer final approval of a proposed horse multi‑use trail sign design because the vendor proof had not yet been returned. The committee also discussed safety concerns about a large stockpile of shellrock and equipment near trail areas.
The committee had expected to review a vendor proof at the meeting; "I am waiting for the proof to come back. I sent it out," Lauer said. "I'm just waiting on a proof from them so we can go... so you guys could approve it." Because the proof was not available, the committee did not vote on final sign artwork or placement and agreed to consider the item at a future meeting.
Committee members emphasized that rule signage will matter for trail users and for compliance with town rules. "I think the signs are huge, but we really have to have that," said Ashley Bruce, a committee member. Committee discussion noted that some proposed brown trail signs might not meet the town's existing sign ordinance; one committee member said the signs should also meet "state statutes." The committee did not adopt or change language at this meeting.
Public Works staff described the town's recent bulk purchase of shellrock. Lauer said the town bought the material in anticipation of a price increase after a local supplier was sold to a large investor, adding the purchase "saved the town" about $1,516,000 and avoided an increase of "almost $8 more a ton." Committee members expressed concern that loaders and other machinery move material when loading and are not present at other times. "Our machines aren't there all the time," Lauer said; another committee member said the hazard is that a rider could arrive while a loader is operating.
The committee asked staff to document the sign design and rule proposals for the town council and to return with the vendor proof so members could consider a formal recommendation. No motions or votes related to signs or the stockpile were taken at this meeting.
The committee scheduled follow‑up: staff will circulate the vendor proof and a summary of the committee's sign‑and‑rule recommendations to the council so that the committee's progress is part of the council update.
