Board approves activities handbook; members raise AED access and field safety concerns

The ISD 717 School Board approved the activities handbook on Aug. 11 and heard questions from board members about AED access at outdoor athletic venues and logistics for community use of fields.

Activities staff reported three updates: an administrative contact change, migration of sports and activities information to the district website after an external vendor sale, and updated activity and event fees. Board members asked whether students are admitted free and whether portable AEDs or unlocked access points are available for athletic fields used by school teams and community groups. Activities staff said the stadium has an AED and the high school maintains units, but access can be limited when buildings or gates are locked during non‑school hours; staff said they would confirm placement and battery/charger maintenance and coordinate with city partners for events not run by the district.

Board members suggested portable AEDs on stands for tournament or off‑site play and discussed signage or partnerships with the city when non‑school groups use facilities. The board approved the activities handbook by a motion and voice vote; staff said they will follow up on AED placement and communication protocols with athletics and the city.
