Council adopts alcohol-ordinance amendments adding variance option and reorganizing sections

On Sept. 8 the City Council adopted on second reading text amendments to Chapter 4 of the city code governing alcohol, making several structural and substantive edits.
City attorney staff said changes since first reading included adding a new subsection (2-4-17(e) in staff remarks) to permit council, by variance, to waive certain distance requirements (for example, between package stores) where appropriate. Staff also restored criteria inadvertently omitted from a prior draft of Section 4-17 and removed references to a superseded subsection so the chapter’s cross-references are consistent.
Council approved the ordinance amendments unanimously on second reading and authorized the mayor to execute associated documents. The amendments establish new effective dates and reorganize chapter references per the staff report.
